Lake Powell is the largest coastal dune lake in Florida and it sits on the line between Walton and Bay counties, with Camp Helen State Park at the mouth and Carillon Beach on the far side. The houses around it are a mix: lake-front properties with decks over the water, gulf-side rentals a short walk from the dunes, and larger places set back among the pines. The common feature is space. These are not narrow cobblestone lots, and a group renting here has usually done so for the room rather than the address. That makes it one of the more comfortable places on this coast to put a table outside and cook. It also means the group is often three generations rather than a dozen adults, which changes what the evening needs to be.

Where we set up in Lake Powell

We cook outdoors on our own flat-top and need roughly 6 ft x 4 ft of level ground with open sky above it and about 3 feet of standing room on the chef's side. Around Lake Powell that is usually a rear deck, the pad between the house and the pool, or a driveway. Two things are worth checking here specifically. Lake-front decks are sometimes built out over the water with a roof, and a roof rules the spot out. And properties among the pines can have branches low enough to matter, which is a question of looking up rather than around. If the obvious spot is under a tree, the drive almost always works instead.

Getting to you

Lake Powell is reached from Front Beach Road on the Bay County side or from the 30A end by way of Inlet Beach, and the county line is the only thing that complicates it. The chef aims to be on site about 45 minutes before your seating. Parking is generally straightforward at properties here, but we ask you to hold a driveway space clear rather than leave the equipment cart on a verge. Lake Powell sits outside the 30A zone where travel is free, so travel is priced against your exact address on the booking form and shown before you commit.

This is reunion and birthday country, and the size of the houses is why. A family that has rented somewhere with a long table, a yard and enough bedrooms for three generations has already solved the hard part; the meal is what usually goes wrong afterwards. Too many people for a restaurant, too many ages for one menu, and somebody in the kitchen all evening missing it. Cooking outside answers all three, because the cooking is the entertainment and the kitchen is never used.
